Survivor contract, rule book are back online

September 2nd, 2010 | Posted in Survivor

I think that CBS might not want you to see this, but they didn’t prevail legally, so the documents are there for you to read, if you want to. You can find out what contestants sign up for to be on the show.

After a challenge from CBS, the Survivor cast contract, which includes the show’s rule book, are back online on reality blurred.

In late July, almost eight weeks after I first published my analysis and comment on of an annotated version of the contract cast members sign, a CBS lawyer in New York sent a DMCA takedown notice to Scribd, the document hosting service I used to present the files in an easy-to-use reader. The reader that was embedded in my stories. CBS’ letter claimed that “[s]uch copying and use of this material constitutes clear infringement of the Rights Owner’s copyrights under the Copyright Act, including the DMCA, and its counterpart laws around the world.”

Tonight, two weeks later, a representative of Scribd wrote to me to say that “CBS has not responded to multiple requests for follow-up on your counter-notifications,” and the the documents “have been restored.” (Scribd, by the way, has been great throughout the process.)

So, go read the Survivor cast contract and the Survivor rule book.

‘Survivor’ host Probst to present prize at Emmys – Variety

August 26th, 2010 | Posted in Survivor

By MICHAEL SCHNEIDER

‘Survivor’ host Jeff Probst will present a prize on Sunday.

Emmy’s reality host crisis has been averted.

Jeff Probst, the winner of this year’s reality host Emmy (his third consecutive victory), has accepted an invitation to present an award at Sunday’s Primetime Emmy telecast.

That will give the TV’s nommed reality hosts their moment in the Primetime spotlight after all.

The nominees, including Probst, balked after NBC and the TV Academy decided to move the reality TV host award out of primetime — where the category had been showcased since its 2008 inception.

Probst and fellow Emmy nominees Tom Bergeron, Phil Keoghan, Heidi Klum and Ryan Seacrest weren’t informed of the change until late July, less than a month before NBC’s Emmycast.

The Next ‘Survivor’ Secret Location Revealed: Nicaragua || Jaunted

August 23rd, 2010 | Posted in Survivor Nicaragua

In recent years, luxury hotels and mansions have been popping up around the laid-back fishing village of San Juan del Sur, which may be the real reason CBS wanted it as its next Survivor locale. While the show’s contestants are living on a beach with little food and less shelter, the show’s crew is said to have rented out the luxurious Pelican Eyes Resort.

The Pelican Eyes is a surrounded by infinity pools, ocean views and lush gardens. They’re also dedicated to the conservation of local wildlife and donate a significant amount of money to local wildlife foundations. Currently, the Pelican Eyes Resort is offering a special deal that includes breakfast daily, a spa day, and accommodations in a cabana for three nights starting at $320 per night.

Jeff ProbstJeff wins an Emmy! Congratulations, Jeff!

I can only imagine how hard it is to host a reality TV show. Have you seen other shows out there? How do you balance personality with being objective? How do you make the show interesting, without making it about yourself.

I have huge respect for Mike Rowe on Dirty Jobs, but that’s not a competition show. Jeff is a better host on a different kind of show. Who is better than Jeff? Hiedi Klum? That guy on Amazing Race? How about Simon Cowell?

Yeah, there’s no one better than Jeff.

Now, maybe John Henson on Wipeout…

For the third consecutive year, the winner for Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality-Competition Program was Jeff Probst of Survivor.

Nicaragua ‘Survivor’ tourism: Nicaragua hopes ‘Survivor’ TV show will propel a tourism surge – latimes.com

August 22nd, 2010 | Posted in Survivor Nicaragua

Violent politics, but it sure looks pretty. If you thought Russell was bad, look at Daniel Ortega.

The “fact sheet” said Nicaragua was chosen for “the country’s natural beauty and the high level of support from the government.”

That would be the government of President Daniel Ortega, the Sandinista former revolutionary who is currently pulling all kinds of strings to get himself reelected in violation of the Nicaraguan Constitution.

Government officials apparently think “Survivor” could be good for foreign business investment and tourism, even though the CBS commercial for the show proclaims Nicaragua a land of “impenetrable terrain, smoldering volcanoes and savage wildlife.” (Savage wildlife? The mosquitoes?)

Granted, Nicaragua as a tourist destination could be a tough sell to anyone who knows much about the country’s violent history; bitter, dirty politics; propensity for earthquakes; and ranking as the second-poorest nation in the hemisphere (barely above Haiti).

‘Survivor’ winner marries in front of reality TV cameras – KansasCity.com

August 20th, 2010 | Posted in Survivor

“Life after ‘Survivor’ has been phenomenal,” said the Kansas City, Kan., native who won “Survivor: Fiji” in 2007. “I went from having my regular career in advertising to wow. I’ve had all this time to see everything from the pyramids of Egypt to Bali. I’ve been in 30-plus countries. I’ve done interviews about ‘Survivor’ in different countries. I’m glad I’m doing all this stuff now, because getting married, you don’t get to do all that stuff.”

Not only did Cole take himself off the market last October — proposing to his girlfriend, Shelley Lee — but the couple decided to let TV cameras intrude on their ceremony and its planning, in the form of Style Network’s long-running reality-based game show “Whose Wedding Is It, Anyway?”

In the episode, which airs this weekend, Cole and Lee select five wedding choices on which they disagree: wardrobe attire (she wants traditional Korean, he wants formal wear), music (Hawaiian hula versus Kansas City jazz) and reception food (tiki tastes versus — what else? — barbecue). And then they engage in little competitions to see who will get their way on each.

CBS’s “SURVIVOR” FORMS A UNIQUE, LONG-TERM ALLIANCE WITH STAND UP TO CANCER

August 17th, 2010 | Posted in Survivor

CBS’s SURVIVOR has formed a unique, long-term alliance with Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C), a grassroots movement raising much-needed funds for groundbreaking cancer research.  SURVIVOR is the first television series to create a team for the SU2C Team Challenge to fundraise for Stand Up To Cancer.  Donations to the Survivor Stands Up team can be made year-round via www.standup2cancer.org/survivor.

Ethan Zohn, who won SURVIVOR: AFRICA, competed in SURVIVOR: ALL STARS and recently overcame Hodgkin’s lymphoma, appeared on CBS News’s THE EARLY SHOW this morning to announce the partnership and his new role as spokesperson for the SURVIVOR team’s SU2C fundraising efforts.

Said Zohn, “I’m a Survivor in every sense of the word and that’s why I’m so excited to be part of this movement to outwit cancer for good.  In my eyes, this is my Survivor moment, my legacy… It’s better than winning the million dollars.”

Among Zohn’s additional outreach as spokesperson will be an ongoing blog which he will host on the www.standup2cancer.org/survivor donation page.  His introductory blog was posted this morning, and blogs from other Survivors will be posted there periodically as well.  Zohn will also be featured during the STAND UP TO CANCER television event, to be broadcast live and commercial-free Friday, Sept. 10 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on CBS as well as additional participating networks and cable outlets.

A CBS PSA campaign driving viewers to the Survivor SU2C donations page will launch tonight and run throughout the year.  One hundred percent of all contributions will go directly to research.  Among the Survivors participating in the spots are fan-favorites such as Rupert Boneham, Amber Brkich-Mariano, James Clement, Colby Donaldson, Cirie Fields, Russell Hantz, Jerri Manthey, Rob Mariano, Jenna Morasca, Parvati Shallow, James ”JT” Thomas Jr., Sandra Diaz-Twine, Benjamin “Coach” Wade, Tom Westman and Ethan Zohn.

Former Oshkosh West cross country standout Matt Lenahan to compete on ‘Survivor’ | thenorthwestern.com

August 17th, 2010 | Posted in Survivor Nicaragua Cast

Also on the website, Lenahan lists dating beautiful women as one of his favorite hobbies and goes by the name “Sash.” In a video previewing the upcoming Survivor season, Sash says he will have female contestants “wrapped around his finger.”

The tone of the video was all part of a strategy to exude confidence before the season began, Leigh Lenahan said. He needed to portray himself as if he was in it to win.

“He’s the same old Matt he always was, she said. He’s the sweet kid who’s also a competitive person. He’s playing a game and that’s exactly what he’s doing; he’s being a competitive game player otherwise he’s the exact same person he always was.”

After watching the video, former Oshkosh West cross country coach Russ Hoxtell said he had to laugh.

“The Matt that I worked with was a very humble, very quiet person. I guess he was saying things he had to say to get on the show, it didn’t sound like the Matt I knew,” Hoxtell said.

A Decade on ‘Reality Row’

August 16th, 2010 | Posted in Survivor

Over-the-top personalities, exotic locales, cutthroat competition, and clever editing combine to make for provocative programming that can draw in an audience by the millions. The first “Survivor” finale in August 2000 had a viewership of 51.7 million, the second highest television audience for the year.

Up until then reality was relegated to cable channels where “The Real World” on MTV ruled the genre. With the success of “Survivor” the broadcast networks saw a viable business model.

“There were a lot of skeptics, myself included,” said Rasha Drachkovitch, of 44 Blue Productions in Studio City. “I thought it was going to be a fad. Instead, it blew up.”

After the summer of 2000, more doors opened for production companies such as 44 Blue, Bunim/Murray Productions in Van Nuys, and others located along a stretch of Ventura Boulevard that became dubbed “Reality Row.”

Berghaus: From NASCAR to ‘Survivor,’ Rice having the time of his life | citizen-times.com | Asheville Citizen-Times

Chase Rice plays guitar at his mother’s home in Fairview. (John Fletcher/Jfletcher@citizen-times.com)

If Chase Rice had a theme song, this could be it because he truly does have the world on a string and he’s in love … with life.

He’s 24 and a 2009 graduate from North Carolina, where he played football.

Out of college Rice was offered a job as a jackman for Hendrick Motorsports, arguably NASCAR’s best team. When he wasn’t working a race, he wrote songs, enough to put out a CD and begin a career as a country singer. Not bad for a guy who didn’t pick up a guitar until his junior year in college.

South Dakota ‘Survivor’ contestant has local ties to CBS | argusleader.com

August 13th, 2010 | Posted in Survivor Nicaragua Cast

Questions are being raised about a South Dakotan who will compete for $1 million on the upcoming CBS reality show “Survivor: Nicaragua” because of her family’s ties to the network’s Sioux Falls affiliate.

CBS revealed this week that Holly Hoffman, 44, of Eureka will be a contestant on the show, which was filmed this summer and will begin airing in September.

But employees and immediate family members of CBS and its affiliated companies are not eligible to be contestants on “Survivor,” according to the show’s rules posted on the CBS website.

Hoffman’s son, Austin, a reporter at KELO-TV, said in a story about Hoffman that she is his mother.

“I know first-hand just how hard it was for Holly to leave her family because to me, she’s known as mom,” he reported Monday.

KELO co-anchor Angela Kennecke then raised the issue of Holly Hoffman’s son working for the station.

The news that reality-show king Mark Burnett is developing a prison talent show for the Discovery Channel’s crime-themed network has some wondering whether the creator of “Survivor” and “The Apprentice” has lost his touch with, well, reality.

Last week’s announcement by the Investigation Discovery channel that it’s developing Burnett’s “Dancing Behind Bars,” along with a singing competition called “Talent Behind Bars,” was greeted by tweets of “WTF” by critics. Some of them have already dubbed the latter project “Prison Idol.”
